STEP2:  write email and make appointment to interview

1.Hi there

My name is Maryam, I'm a student at Unitec, studying a diploma in English . I'm doing some research about something old that related to New Zealand culture.

My friend and I interested in visiting Alberton , would it be possible each of us to interview someone about history of the house with several questions, and we need to record a short segment of the interview as well. Is that alright with you?

Can we make an an appointment after our class 2pm?

What time would be convenient for you?

Kind Regards

Maryam

2.
Dear Maryam,

Thank you for your e-mail.  We are happy to help with your project but I thought you may like to know that two other students came last week and did their interviews with me.  If you don’t mind that, I am happy to help you.  Either Wednesday or Friday afternoon would suit.  Please let me know which day is best for you.

There is an entrance fee for Alberton of $10.00 per person.   If you belong to the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, entrance is free.  We have a booklet on Alberton which is $8.00.   It would be a help to drop in today or tomorrow and purchase one to give you good background information on Alberton and help work out your interview questions.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Penny - Alberton

INTERVIEW
.

Alberton is a property of the New Zealand Historic places Trust and It was built in 1863.
Today Alberton still alive as a venue for wedding, concerts and meeting.

          The Garden

Allan Kerr Taylor once owned over 500 acres stretching from Mount Albert Road to Western Spring Road. The home farm of 160 acres included six acres of garden. New garden have been created and some interesting trees which remain are the oaks(over a century old); redwood, walnut, holly, and Japanese cedars.

The ballroom
Extensions to the house in the 1870's created an inner private sitting room.

The Dining Room
The wall paper in this room dates from the 1880's. Red was a popular Victorian color for dining rooms.

The Study Room

The Master Bedroom & Boudoir
This was the mail bedroom of the house. All the ten children were born here. The boudoir was Sophia Taylor's private sitting room and may have been a bedroom or nursery when the children were young.

The Guest Bedroom

 The Dressing Room

The room was once Allan Taylor's dressing room and has been restored as such.

The Watercolor portrait by H Morton shows Sophia Taylor as young woman in the 1870's.

The Nursery
This is one of the few upstairs rooms to a fireplace. The Nursery is part of the extensions which were made to Alberton in 1882.

Blue Bedroom
The blue bedroom emerges as a girl's room but girls of the Kerr Taylor family were not far behind their brothers in their love of horses and outdoor activities.
Two of the great-grandchildren painted the furniture blue during one holiday when staying with their aunts.
The Library
Books reflect the family's interests. Here are the children's schoolbooks, French, Latin, Mathematics, Geography and History much used and often passed down.

Wash-house
The most remarkable feature of the wash-house is the well. It is 12 meter deep and it had been concreted over at floor level but has been opened up and illuminated .

Here is my presentation.

Reflection

For task 4 I have to research something old or new that related to New Zealand culture. First of all I have no idea how can I start this task but suddenly one idea came to my mind. I was thinking every country should have a historical places then I did some research on internet and I found 3 historical houses in Auckland. Also I was surprised when I found them because New Zealand is a young country and I never realized it has a old places to visit. I wasn't sure which one I should visit it but Trish recommended going to Alberton house so I decided to go there and found out what is it look like.
Firstly , I made an appointment with Penny who is co-coordinator of Alberton and she replied to my email straight away and her email was warm and friendly.
While I was visiting Alberton with two of my classmates Penny was so busy because a group of people doing some repair in Alberton that's why I couldn't interview her but I had a pleasant conversation with Jane who is working there as a volunteer and she spoke very clearly and slowly because she knew we are studying English and English is our second language.
We spent about 2.30 hours in Alberton. Normally I'm not interested in old stuff but I really interested in Alberton family history and their house very much. I think in future I will visit the other historical houses.

Over all, I enjoyed my task 4 because my interview was quite successful and I heard a wonderful story of Alberton family who are lived in this house and I saw lots of antique stuff and I am really please that New Zealand historical trust look after the Alberton very well.
